That's about how long I've been getting paid to put ideas to words. So, when John Cass and I discussed a great way to garner attention from some publishers this morning, I thought I should also get my writing self in gear a little bit more.

As someone with 21+ blogs (many of which are just SEO placeholders), I thought it would be a fun experiment to write a bunch of blog posts in a short period of time. It's nothing like NaNoWriMo - the National Novel Writing Month that takes place each November. No, it's more like a Twitter reporting gig where you need to live Tweet an event.

I remember one a few years back when Joselin Mane hired me to live tweet an event at Harvard. Great time and a lot of work. He was thrilled with the result and even more amazingly, I put out a scalding 265 Tweets in just over two hours. My followers that day were a little irked I think...and they should have used something like Muuter to help block my specific missives.

But I digress.

Where I'm at right now in this pursuit is on post number seven out of 11. Or maybe it's post eight out of 11. Whatever the case, I'm closer than I was an hour ago and I still have two hours left to accomplish this task.

Oh, that post about publishers and books and links to get people's attention...that will be up over at JeffCutler.com/jeff in a little while.

Thanks John!Jeff Cutlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02095350031114092271noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17110420.post-58169081231237863032011-05-01T14:24:00.001-07:002011-05-01T14:24:40.857-07:00Novell Vibe Outreach Event - Boston - April 2011As many of you know, I create content for a living.

More simply put, I write stuff and people pay me to do so. I’m also a social media trainer, guest speaker and event organizer. To that end, I keep an event calendar over at WithJeff.com and schedule dozens of speaking gigs and training sessions each year all over the United States.

In my role as content creator and event organizer, I’ve put together numerous Tweetups. These have included events for Nissan, Society of Professional Journalists, Egg-Nog Fanatics, the audience of NomX3 and even Ford Motor Company. But recently, I jumped up a level and was honored to be able to merge a few of my skills at an event for Novell - it was what I like to call a Focus Group Tweetup.

The invitation-only event (tweaking the literal definition of a Tweetup with its exclusive nature) brought together 16 technology, community, social and business professionals to talk about a software product. I planned the event at the amazing Brasserie Jo in Boston - and I will tell anyone who will listen that it’s as close as you can get to dining in Paris without flying 3000 miles.

So, right off the bat I had upped the ante. Here are some photos from the night, some facts about the discussion, a link to the product if you want to try it out, and my evaluation of how things went. If you’ve ever wanted to organize a Tweetup, anyone can do it. You just need some organizational skills and the energy to pull it off.

I expect to be doing similar events in Salt Lake City and Austin, TX over the next month or so, and will be doing a few Ice Cream Tweetups over the summer in Boston. Just follow me on twitter if you’d like to be sure not to miss those Tweetups.
Novell Vibe Cloud Outreach Tweetup - Boston, MA - April 25, 2010

The food was amazing - a Prix Fixe menu prepared with four courses and select beverages from Brasserie Jo.

The guest speaker for the evening was the talented Doug Haslam. He talked about community and collaboration - two of the facets that the Novell team is trying to foster with their Vibe Cloud product.

The Novell team was on hand to discuss how to use Vibe Cloud and to answer questions from various social media luminaries. Essentially, Vibe Cloud is real-time social collaboration made enterprise-secure.
This is another blog where the last post showed up in May.
These little words are just to bring my site current. Hopefully it works.
I've been immersed in social media for about a decade. And I've been a professional writer and author since the mid 1980s.

When Diane Darling asked me to help with her new book, I jumped at the chance. She is charming and upfront about her skillset and her mantras. She wants to see people succeed and has a vision in how that can happen. For even experienced networking and social media professionals, Darling's tips and insight can be valuable.

For instance, in her most recent book...
...Diane gets down and dirty in how professionals at all levels leverage their skills and outgoing nature to make connections and ultimately make themselves more successful financially and emotionally.

Give it a read...even if you buy it just to see my section...it's a nice primer for those who are a bit skeptical that traditional networking still can get the job done. I believe a mix of traditional and new media is the right route, but I'm a tech-head early adopter, what do I know?

ALSO, there's an event coming up on May 18 where you can meet Diane in person and get your book signed. I expect that I'll be there too and will sign anything you bring in - doesn't have to be a book.

Here's the info on that May 18 event.Jeff Cutlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02095350031114092271noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17110420.post-20616363399461234172010-01-24T07:14:00.000-08:002010-01-24T07:14:55.321-08:00NamingI think you should definitely take a look at this piece for details on what I'm about to share or at least discuss.

I've decided to expand my company presence to encompass JeffCutler.com, Jeff Cutler™ and Novel Ideas.

I think it gives me greater reach, solidifies my brand and limits confusion.
What are your thoughts?Jeff Cutlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02095350031114092271noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17110420.post-15738213363222769552008-12-11T18:43:00.000-08:002008-12-11T18:46:31.151-08:00Novel Ideas heads to CESThat's right, next month I'll be at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to speak with thousands of vendors about their products. I likely won't speak with all 3000 exhibitors, but I will likely get some great stories for my two clients - NPR and Gatehouse Media.

I'll fill you in here or on my other blogs as the show approaches.Jeff Cutlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02095350031114092271noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17110420.post-11529710450724370692008-08-12T19:22:00.000-07:002008-08-12T19:23:08.047-07:00Who is the real Novel Ideas' writerI think I am. Here's the story...

Now it seems that there are two other Novel Ideas companies in the nation. I'm guessing the count is much higher, but when I opened my writing services firm on January 1, 1992 I didn't realize that the world would shrink so much as the Internet brought us together.

With my Novel Ideas writing site at Ideas2Words dot com - www.ideas2words.com - I attract a modest amount of business. But as you can guess, the reason my Novel Ideas site isn't at NovelIdeas.com is two-fold.

One - the name was taken. Pure and simple. Novel Ideas is a bookmark company in North Carolina. Good name. Fair product. I was too slow.

Two - NovelIdeas looks like Noveiideas or NoveLLdeas when written out. Having two of the same letter - unless you're google - in your domain name is bad news. So I haven't pursued it.

But now there's a writer marketing herself and her company - Novel Ideas - out in the western part of the United States.

What to do? Cease and desist? Nice letter asking her to give up the name? Combine forces and have two offices of Novel Ideas?

I don't know. Send me your suggestions.

Right now I'm on a writing sabbatical, but still have some billing through both Jeff Cutler and Novel Ideas. So the company isn't on hiatus and isn't going away.

It begs the question of intellectual property in this age of fast-moving people and concerns.

Keep reading...I'll let you know how it all turns out.Jeff Cutlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02095350031114092271noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17110420.post-51411710487170639692008-06-03T17:46:00.001-07:002008-06-03T17:46:56.105-07:00Find me here...You can find me at the following links. When you type in ideas2words.blogspot.com you show up here at a blog titled Bowl of Cheese.

Well, Bowl of Cheese is actually the name of a blog and podcast I run over in the non-blogspot world. I already own the BOC domain and therefore should be able to let this seemingly random blogspot name go away.

But it's not that simple. You see, ideas2words.com is the site of my company, Novel Ideas. I have owned ideas2words.com for a long time (because NovelIdeas.com wasn't available) and it says exactly what I provide to my clients.

For more than 16 years, I've been providing writing services and a unique way to turn their ideas into words. It's copywriting, branding, advertising and marketing.

SO, it would be foolish to dilute my brand by giving away this site...especially from a marketing and branding perspective.

But I also realize that I'm not doing much with this site and I should be posting more writing-related content here.

I'm in a quandary. If there were an easy way to port all these posts to another of my blogspot properties, I'd do so and probably just use this site to mirror jeffcutler.com or ideas2words.com.

But I can't find that in the controls.

Further, if there were an easy way to duplicate the Bowl of Cheese posts here, I might do that as well, but that means dual posting all the time and I post pretty much daily at BOC.

Gimme your comments and let me know if there's a way to resolve this without damaging my brand and without losing my content.

Thanks!

JeffJeff Cutlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02095350031114092271noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17110420.post-56999022939947173332007-10-26T03:29:00.000-07:002007-10-26T03:34:33.136-07:00BlogtoberfestJust came from an event in Boston called Blogtoberfest. It's just a regular (well, they've only had two so far) gathering of bloggers in the Boston area.

People there had myriad reasons for throwing thoughts and words up on the Web and I definitely qualified.

Currently, I'm running about 10 blogs and am wandering down a path between manic attention to posting frequently and the complete blog-fade pattern that hits so many people who have real lives to attend to.

The blogspot blogs I have have suffered the most. I think it's because readers are more likely to visit my main domains - bowlofcheese, jeffcutler, and Novel Ideas. The only blog here that's really starting to get some juice and some traction is the worry site.

So, if you stumble upon my writing, just follow the links until you find some fun stuff to read or assignments you want to complete.

Thanks for reading.

JeffJeff Cutlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02095350031114092271noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17110420.post-3761494902854041702007-08-13T11:34:00.001-07:002007-08-13T11:34:51.964-07:00It's been a whileAnd it has been a while.

I've been updating the regular location of BOC - so go there to see more.

Here are the addresses you should follow...

See http://www.jeffcutler.com for more details or follow along at http://www.bowlofcheese.com or http://www.tdf08.comJeff Cutlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02095350031114092271noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17110420.post-37668298022036212322007-08-03T01:29:00.000-07:002007-08-03T01:31:49.265-07:00Just look aroundOK. As a motivational technique, it helps me clear my creative throat and get some words down on paper. Like many creative people, the procrastination bug is always waiting to bite me, and that’s exactly what caused me to reach this blog-purpose thought.

Stay with me… I’m in the final stages of preparing an RFP for a large client and have hit a roadblock with some of the preparations. So I decided this morning to click around the Web and clear my mind by completely ignoring my responsibilities. Well, as I traveled around the Internet I came upon a blog by a friend of mine and I had to read every post.

Luckily she only had about a month and a half worth or else I could have been at it all day. But it seems that she’s using her blog as motivation to get into shape and prepare herself mentally and physically for an upcoming marathon. Severely private in many ways, I was surprised to see her running recaps out in the electronic wilderness for all to read. But then I understood how important the race must be for her.

To pursue this goal privately would be easy because giving up wouldn’t have any consequences. But now, with a growing readership and the concreteness of her training recorded in electrons, failure isn’t an option. I’m pretty impressed by her steps – both toward the marathon and toward her increased Internet presence.

It’s amazing how things change over time. Good luck.

More to come…Jeff Cutlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02095350031114092271noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17110420.post-1130441479388107222005-10-27T12:28:00.000-07:002005-10-27T12:34:16.813-07:00Borrowed from KathleenThis little ditty was posted on Kathleen Gilroy's Blog, and I think it’s AWESOME! Go there today and give her props for digging this beauty up.

And, if you go there today, this entry is top-most in her blog.

Subject: Hell The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington chemistry mid-term. The answer by one student was so "profound" that the professor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well.

Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant.

One student, however, wrote the following:

First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving.

As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell.

With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added.

This gives two possibilities: 1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose. 2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over. So which is it?

If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that, "it will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you," and take into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number 2 must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over.

The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct...leaving only Heaven thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting "Oh my God."

THIS STUDENT RECEIVED THE ONLY "A"

More to come...at www.jeffcutler.com/jblogJeff Cutlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02095350031114092271noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17110420.post-1130441322816042792005-10-27T12:27:00.001-07:002005-10-27T12:28:42.930-07:00Pinching NickelsThe treasury has issued a new nickel, but that’s not really the subject of this post. Instead of turning on the heat, I’ve been using our decorative gas fireplace and an electric – oil-filled heater to keep tiny locations in the house warm.

This isn’t the most efficient way to stay warm, and yes, I could “go put on a sweater”, but it’s keeping my oil bill down for now. And since my contract is a ‘cap’ and not a true ‘lock’, I will benefit greatly when the price plummets next month. Which THEN brings me to my real point – thrift.

That term essentially means wise economy in the management of money. And that’s pretty much what I’m doing by keeping costs down.

Now, if I could only find a way to get my parents to invite me to dinner more often.

More to come…Jeff Cutlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02095350031114092271noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17110420.post-1130441266707219422005-10-27T12:27:00.000-07:002005-10-27T12:27:46.840-07:00Water WaterOur bodies are essentially sacks of water held together with some tissue and a fine layering of skin. Therefore, I’m surprised that we haven’t dissolved into the background and become part of the wet, wintry weather that’s plagued us all these long days.

My friend Tom has found a site that offers up just what this weather requires.

More to come…when I dry out…Jeff Cutlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02095350031114092271noreply@blogger.com0
